Florida is home to countless natural springs but Devil’s Den stands out as it is underground! This unique spring is accessed by some narrow stairs that lead out to a swim platform where divers, and those snorkeling, enter the water. Also Known as Devil’s Hole – you swim under the ceiling opening where shafts of light beam down onto the crystal clear waters. If you have a waterproof camera or one of those waterproof phone cases – don’t forget them!

If you want to scuba dive and have your own gear you can certainly take it along and use the facilities but we stuck to snorkeling. Snorkelers and scuba divers mix in the same area so you do have to watch out for each other. Scuba divers obviously can access the deeper points of the cave and underwater tunnels but we saw quite a lot just holding our breath and diving down.

Unlike other springs, Devil’s Den is mostly covered so you get the sense that the water is colder. Whilst it can feel chilly once you first get in you soon get acclimatized and the water in all Florida springs actually hover around the same temperature (72 degrees).

The site has some basic changing facilities and for those looking to make it a longer visit they do have accommodation on site. You are also very close to other ‘regular’ spring sites so you could combine this with another stop (as swim time here is timed and for divers and snorkelers only).

This is definitely a bucket list kinda deal. It’s not the cheapest place to swim but for it’s uniqueness and the opportunity for some magical photo memories it’s a must.
